More specifically, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. I've been holed up in meetings which finally ended an hour ago. So, since we're at the Paddington Hilton in London, I went to pay respects.
Tunnels, bridges, railroads, ships, and the Paddington Station — he did it all, and in a relatively short life.
Being here is very timely as, for Christmas, I got a copy of Brunel: The Man Who Built the World by Steven Brindle and Dan Cruickshank. It's an easy and enjoyable read.

My favorite Brunel project is the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Brunel won the design competition at age 24. After delays, the bridge was finally completed in 1864 -- and still holds up under modern automotive traffic! I used to walk across the bridge every day when I lived in Bristol. The setting and views are spectacular.
